Over the passed few years, the local rap scene has watched JOLO grow from an underground hip-hop lyricist to one of Filipino rap’s noticeable personalities. JOLO aka J-Dot has let us in on a little secret: the scene has been missing something vital, and he’s got it. With the experience and patience of a veteran and the hunger of a rookie, JOLO’s main objective is simple: to take over the game.
And now, after years of lyrical hiatus, JOLO is back! Under an independent music label HI:FAN Records, he is pacing up work on his first ever solo LP called “The One That Got A Way” a musical trip back to his hometown Quezon City with a distinct swagger as only JOLO can bring.
Born and raised Jo’lo Raagas, 32 year old JOLO began his journey unlike most of the other rappers. Brought up from the slums of Sampaloc to the quiet neighborhoods of Novaliches, he started rapping as a hobby, making his own improvised mixtapes. JOLO began to take his lyrical talent seriously by attending an underground hip-hop event “Blow up the spot” where he met Artstrong, 7Shots, and other local rap acts. One thing led to another and he finally caught his first major break when he was introduced to DJ M.O.D. (who produced Francis M’s first two albums and part of the super group Mastaplann during the early 90’s) by his friend and fellow rapper Kristyles. It was then when JOLO got his first guest appearance on a major record label release (Mo Twister’s album in 2000).
Considered as probably the brightest rap star coming from Quezon City since Mastaplann in the early 90’s, JOLO, the self-proclaimed King of Q.C., will indeed be followed by Hip-Hop fans for a long time to come.
